Review: Wishbone Salad Spritzers

Published 14:22 pm

I was delighted recently to discover Wish-Bone Salad Spritzers in the food section of WalMart. For the heart-health-conscious among us...and after a heart attack several months ago that includes me...the benefits were immediately obvious.

By spritzing, I could carefully control how much I wanted to use on a healthy salad. Not only that but, as the label says, you only get one calorie per spritz.

It gets better and better.

Flavors

There's a nice array of eight flavors of Wish-Bone Salad Spritzers listed on the website. They are Balsamic Breeze Vinaigrette, Red Wine Mist, Caesar Delight Vinaigrette, French Flair Vinaigrette, Raspberry Bliss Vinaigrette, Asian Silk Vinaigrette, Ranch, and Honey Mustard Buzz.

Not listed on the website is an Italian flavor I picked up along with Balsamic Breeze, so perhaps they are expanding their list and haven't updated their website.

Spritzer containers come in 7 ounce size with 26 servings, 10 sprays regarded as a single serving. There's a use-by date on the bottom of the plastic container.

Nutrition and Contents

The oil used in the spritzer is extra virgin olive oil, the preferred type from among the usual oils for the heart-conscious (without getting into more exotic varieties of oil). With the oil content, you need to shake before using.

A single calorie per serving is great, but, naturally, you need to consider the other content in determining just how healthy this is.

The Wish-Bone Balsamic Breeze Vinaigrette Salad Spritzer boasts 1 gram of fat and zero trans fat (the Auric Goldfinger of fats). Sodium is a little higher than I'd like at 130 milligrams, or 5 percent daily value, but if you are using it on a healthy, low-calorie salad, then I think that strikes me as a perfectly acceptable trade-off. Lovely score for artery-blocking cholesterol content, 0 milligrams and 0 percent.

If you are also diabetic, as I've been diagnosed, you'll be pleased to note a serving has 0 percent carbohydrates, or 1 gram, with 0 percent protein (note that whenever you take in carbs, ideally you compensate by taking in protein.)

Remember, we're talking about the contents of a single serving. Use two servings instead of one, double everything, and so on.

More Details

The website can give you additional information and spritzer-specific recipes, three per flavor. For example, the listing for Balsamic Breeze currently list recipes for chicken salad with fennel and pine nuts, crunchy fruit salad, fresh and fabulous salad, with prep time and, where applicable, cooking time. The website is at salad-lover.com.

Observations

I won't be coy. This stuff is quite good and I really do like the spritzing option which gives you the chance to control how much you use. You buy it off the shelf, refrigerate once open. If the sprayer becomes clogged for any reason (although I've have no problems yet), I'm sure putting it under a hot water faucet would open it up.

I highly recommend this product and expect to be a regular user.
