VPicks Guitar Picks

A short review of one of the most popular high end pick makers in the guitar world.

Review: VPicks Guitar Picks

Boutique picks seem to be the new online trend for guitarists, with new sites popping up almost daily selling all manner of strange new picks that make numerous claims about better tone, enhanced playability and superior durability. Recently, I decided to purchase a few of the more popular examples of this new pick trend and give them a try. The first picks I chose to order were the increasingly popular V-picks, made and sold by Vinni Smith in California.

V-Picks are available in more styles than you can shake a stick at (twenty to be precise) and are constructed of a special plexi-glass type material That makes them fairly unique in the pick world. This material offers several advantages; first- V-Picks are famous for their "grip", the unique way that the material seems to cling to skin as it heats up. It is not sticky or tacky to the touch, but instead seems to just become increasingly slip-resistant the longer you play.

This would probably be a real lifesaver for people who suffer from sweaty hands (I'm fortunate enough to not have this problem, and can't say that I ever really experience a slipping problem with any picks, but the "grippiness" of the V-picks is noticeable and I can certainly see how it would be beneficial.) Second, the V-pick material seems to impart more clarity, girth and note definition to my playing- there is certainly a difference in the sound as compared to regular plastic picks, and I personally do think that the tone is better. Finally, V-picks are more durable than run of the mill plastic picks, partly due to their material, and partly because they are fairly thick.

I purchased two sizes of V-pick, the small pointed (which is said to be the closest in size and shape to my beloved Jazz IIIs) and the medium pointed (just in case the small was TOO small) and they arrived promptly in my mailbox a padded envelope, along with a very nice, full color catalog and business card. My immediate impression of the V-picks was that psychologically they seem as if they should be very slippery, which led me to keep thinking about whether or not they were starting to slide.

They never were, however, and once I got over this mental block and focused more on my playing I was able to start to enjoy what V-Picks brought to the table. One thing that I find myself liking quite a bit, but haven't seen mentioned anywhere (even in V-Picks own advertising) is that the angle of the bevel on the edge of the picks makes playing quick passages extremely easy. I can literally struggle to play something with my usual Jazz IIIs, but pick up a V-Pick and play it cleanly- which impressed the hell out of me!

Even though the price may seem somewhat high initially (but still nothing compared to what some other pick makers charge) when you start to factor in the unique qualities of the V-pick, I feel that they are more than worth it. As a small pseudo-aside, V-Picks also offers a guitar slide made of their special pick material, and I decided to purchase one of these along with my picks, mostly on a whim.

I can say easily and unequivocally that it is the best guitar slide I have ever used. It weighs virtually nothing (which is fantastic, since it keeps the slide from banging down into the frets, or overshooting an intonation point due to too much mass) and sounds like the sweetest bottle neck anyone from the delta could have ever dreamed up.

All in all, my experiences with the V-Pick company and their special material have been very positive, and I would recommend their products to anybody.
