Review: Sonicare Elite 9500 Electric Toothbrush

I've got a confession to make: I hate brushing my teeth. Ever since I was a kid, I have detested the taste of toothpaste, the feel of the toothbrush scratching my gums, the gagging feeling I get from brushing my tongue, and just about every other aspect of tooth brushing. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I opened a gift from my mother last Christmas and found a Sonicare Elite 9500 Electric Toothbrush inside. Yay. Thanks Mom, just what I wanted.

I didn't bother opening the Sonicare Elite 9500 for a few weeks, but my mother kept bugging me to try it, so I finally gave in. It came with a handle, charger, travel case, brush head holder and 2 heads, a small and a large. I have a big mouth, so I hooked up the large head, charged the handle and gave it a go. The things we do for our mothers.

There are two speeds, max and gentle. The Sonicare Elite 9500 also has an "Easy Start" feature - the toothbrush automatically starts slow for the first 14 uses, so that new users can acclimate more easily. I chose gentle for my first use, and I immediately noticed that the gum scratching that normally bothers me with a regular toothbrush was non-existent.

The bristles are just stiff enough to get the job done, and they're contoured to fit nicely against your gum line. The vibrations were like a little massage for my mouth. I ratcheted up the speed to max, just to see if I could take it - max is definitely a little more intense, but not at all painful or rough.

There is a built-in timer that signals you to move the Sonicare Elite 9500 to a different quadrant of your mouth every 30 seconds for a total of 2 minutes of brushing time, with the option of adding an extra 30 second segment for your tongue.

The Sonicare Elite 9500 automatically shuts off when you've hit the 2 minute mark (you can also turn it off manually if you're pressed for time). I was enjoying the experience so much, however, that I was almost disappointed when my time was up. Even brushing my tongue wasn't as bad as usual! I've also found that I can use much less toothpaste with the Sonicare Elite 9500 than I need with a regular toothbrush, which is a nice little money saver.

The best part, however, was the feel of my teeth once I was done. They felt totally sleek - dentist-clean! Oddly enough, despite my hatred of tooth brushing I don't hate the dentist, largely because I love the way my teeth feel after a visit. Since using the Sonicare Elite 9500, my dentist visits are almost pointless. Where I used to be in the chair for 45 minutes while the dentist scraped my teeth, now she just gives them a quick once over with the scraper, does a quick polish and I'm out.

I travel a great deal, so the long-lasting battery in the Sonicare Elite 9500 comes in handy. No need to bring the charger on short trips when I can go 2 weeks without charging it. I went on a month-long overseas trip recently, however, and I decided to pack light and use a regular toothbrush for the month. That was a BIG mistake. My teeth felt dirty the entire time. I've also tried other electric toothbrushes, including some that are powered by AA batteries, but they just don't measure up to the Sonicare Elite 9500.

The one drawback to the Sonicare Elite 9500 is the expense. Lucky for me, my mother gets a kick out of buying them for me for Christmas, and you can find them for less at warehouse stores like Sam's Club or Costco. Trust me, it's worth it. A former hater of all things tooth-brushing-related, after using the Sonicare Elite 9500 just once I became a complete convert. The Sonicare Elite 9500 is truly nothing short of amazing. I guess maybe Mom really does know best!
