Review: Popeye Canned Spinach is Inexpensive and Delicious

Published 17:13 pm

Up until very recently, I had never eaten canned spinach. Although I had seen various brands of the product on the shelves of supermarkets for years, I never really had the inclination to purchase a can. Ever since a friend gave me a 13.5- ounce can of Popeye (R) brand canned spinach a few weeks ago, as part of a house- warming gift, I had been very curious as to how the product tasted and wondered how it compared to fresh spinach. I decided to end my speculation last week, when I opened the can of Popeye (R) brand canned spinach.

While cooking some Fish Filets and rice for dinner one night, I realized that some vegetables would add to the meal, greatly. Even though there were several cans of peas, corn and carrots on my pantry shelves, they weren't exactly the types of vegetables that I was in the mood for. I had a hankering for something different, a change of pace, if you will. Enter Popeye (R) brand canned spinach. As soon as I spotted the can of spinach on my pantry shelf, I knew that it was the right vegetable to serve with the fish and rice. Upon opening the can of Popeye (R) brand canned spinach, I immediately noticed the fresh, verdant green color of the vegetables.

There was no mistaking the fact that the spinach contained in the can was real, high- quality fresh spinach that was cooked before being canned. The smell of the spinach is earthy and the same as any fresh spinach that has just been cooked. I glanced at the ingredient list on the can before I placed the spinach into a cooking pan. The only ingredients contained in the can of Popeye (R) brand canned spinach are spinach, water and salt.

The 13.5- ounce can was packed- full of leafy, green spinach, with only a small amount of water added. As far as the salt content is concerned, after tasting the spinach, it was apparent that only a minimal amount of salt is added to the spinach, just enough to slightly enhance the already- excellent flavor of the canned vegetables. In fact, the sodium- content of the Popeye (R) brand canned spinach is 200 mg, or 8% of the recommended Daily Intake per 1/2- cup serving. Each 13.5- ounce can of this product contains three 1/2- cup servings.

Like many other packaged food products, the serving- size is often misleading, or unrealistic. After heating the spinach, with the addition of some salt, pepper, vegetable oil spread and a little garlic powder, I consumed almost the entire can's contents by myself, as I ate it with the fish filets and rice. The small amount of Popeye (R) brand canned spinach that I did not consume that evening, I added to some scrambled eggs the following day. Those scrambled eggs were among the very best scrambled eggs I have ever eaten, anywhere.

I was so impressed with the flavor and quality of the Popeye (R) brand canned spinach, that when I went grocery shopping a few days later, I had to purchase another can of the product. I could have purchased fresh spinach, but it cost more, comparatively, than the Popeye (R) brand canned spinach and would have to be utilized quickly, otherwise, it would go bad.

While I certainly do enjoy eating and cooking fresh spinach, it often requires significantly more effort to prepare, than the Popeye (R) brand canned spinach. The convenience factor of this product makes it a logical choice for time- strapped consumers to use. Aside from being eaten as a side dish and in eggs and omelettes, Popeye (R) brand canned spinach is ideal for use as a pizza topping, in casseroles, stuffed chicken and seafood and in soups and stews.

In culinary language, the term "Florentine" usually refers to the inclusion of spinach in a dish, or recipe. With Popeye (R) brand canned spinach, virtually any type of dish can become Florentine immediately. While the high- quality, dynamic flavor and ease and convenience of using this product are indeed major selling points, Popeye (R) brand canned spinach is also a healthy product to consume.

Nutritionally, Popeye (R) brand canned spinach contains 45 calories, with 5 calories from fat per 1/2- cup serving. Always economically- priced, this product is normally in- stock at major food retailers everywhere. For consumers who are on a diet, or are watching their intake of calories, Popeye (R) brand canned spinach is a wonderful product to keep on hand.
