Review: Old Bay With Lemon & Herb Seasoning

Published 08:03 am

One of my favorite dinners to cook during the summer is a crab steamer pot. It usually contains snow crab legs, some form of sausage, corn on the cob and small red "new" potatoes.

While the contents of my steamer pots may vary from time, including lobster tail or excluding the sausage, one thing never does '" the Old Bay Seasoning. In particular, I like using Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning.

Lemon is always the perfect compliment to seafood and selected herbs like bay leaf and red pepper add just the perfect amount of zing to make the dish come to life. One is good but the two together are magical.

Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning contains bay leaves, celery seed, lemon juice solids, natural flavors, other miscellaneous herbs and spices, modified corn starch, paprika, red pepper and salt. It also contains calcium silicate, citric acid and maltodextrin.

This unique blend of herbs and spices seems to wake up any seafood dish from fish to lobster to shrimp. Its use can only improve what might otherwise be a bland and boring meal.

Let's talk nutrition. A serving size of Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning is ¼ tsp. Approximately 106 servings are contained in each 3 oz can.

The seasoning contains no calories, fat, carbohydrates, cholesterol or sugar. It does; however, contain 150 milligrams of salt. That could put this seasoning out of the reach of individuals who are watching their salt intake.

On the flip side, Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning contains no nutritional value on its own. That comes from the foods the seasoning flavors.

Using Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning is easy. You just sprinkle it directly onto the dish you wish to flavor. It is particularly good when used with tuna, shrimp, salmon, orange roughy and flounder but it is suitable for any seafood item.

The cooking method makes no difference at all. You can bake, broil, grill or steam and still get fabulous results. This seasoning is versatile enough to suit them all.

To make a steamer pot you need ½ pound of snow crab legs and/or lobster tails, one small ear of corn on the cob and about a half-dozen small red potatoes. You will also need some kind of steaming mechanism.

I use small old-fashioned enameled steamer pots that I purchased from Wal-Mart for around $10 each. I have enough pots for every person in my family to have their own.

I usually steam mine in a hot oven of about 400 degrees Fahrenheit but they can also be cooked on top of the stove if you don't have more pots than burners. The pots should cook for about 30 to 45 minutes depending upon how much food is contained therein.

Begin by adding hot water to the bottom of the steamer pot. Then place the steaming basket or ledge into place above that.

Next, add the potatoes and corn or any other vegetable you desire into the basket or on top of the ledge. Place the crab legs, lobster tails and/or sausage over that. Sprinkle liberally with Old Bay Lemon &Herb Seasoning.

Seal the pot with its lid and steam for 15 minutes. At the end of that time, check to make sure sufficient water still exists to complete the steaming process. If not, add more water.

Continuing cooking for another 15 minutes. Then check to see if the food is done through. This will be evidenced by the tenderness of the corn and potatoes.

If more time is required, steam for an additional 15 minutes. Do not go beyond 45 minutes or the crab/lobster will be overcooked.

Remove the pot from its heat source and take it to the table as is, placing it on a protective surface or trivet. Now your guests are ready for a delicious seafood treat.

This is a simple and fun way to make a meal your guests won't soon forget.

Here is my summary review of Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning:

Taste: The taste has just the right amount of lemon combined with paprika, bay leaf and red pepper. It is guaranteed to wake up your taste buds.

Appearance:  Your meal will look just as good as it tastes.

Nutrition:  Old Bay with Lemon &Herb Seasoning has no real nutritional value. However, it also doesn't have unwanted fat, cholesterol, carbs or sugar. Its only negative is the sodium content.

Variety:  If you don't like lemon and herbs, Old Bay has other seasoning options. These include, but are not necessarily limited to, the Original Old Bay, Old Bay with Less Sodium, Old Bay Blackened Seasoning, Old Bay with Garlic and Herbs, Old Bay Rub and Old Bay Crab Cake, Salmon or Tuna.

Ease:  This seasoning could not be easier to use. You just sprinkle, cook and serve. It's the perfect way for a novice cook to fool her guests into thinking she is a full fledged gourmet chef.

Packaging:  The seasoning comes in Old Bay's yellow, blue and red can. The Old Bay logo is prominently displayed. Pictures of the types of food on which the seasoning works best are also featured for those who don't like to take the time to read the fine print.

Ease of storage: The can is small, measuring 3" in height by 2" in width and 1" in depth. It should easily fit into any kitchen drawer, cabinet or pantry. It will even fit into many different types of spice racks.

Availability:  Old Bay products can be found in most major grocery stores as well as discount department stores with an extension food section.

Product purchase probability:  I cook a lot of seafood so Old Bay products are always in my cabinet.
