Review: MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay

The Dunlop Company has really taken the MXR brand in the right direction recently- from wallowing in the sub-par, laurels resting fate of so many companies of yesteryear to once again being a powerful force on the guitar effects scene. If one needs an example of how the new MXR brand continues to innovate and provide well priced, great sounding effects, the Carbon Copy analog delay is a great place to look.
As someone who remembers the rocky start Dunlop's incarnation of the MXR company got off to, I was a bit reluctant to accept the Carbon Copy, but the rave reviews and accolades intrigued me and I finally gave one a hot. Boy am I glad I did! I'm not much of an effects pedal user, but the one effect I almost always have running is delay- which means for me delay has to be great, I am completely unwilling to accept any cut corners or issues when it comes to a delay pedal. I have gone through delays from Ibanez, Maxon, Boss and plenty of other companies, and for me the MXR has come out on top, even over a significantly more expensive Maxon analog delay that has recently found itself on commission in a local shop!
For me, what makes the MXR the winner is a combination of several factors: First, the size is nice- how the electronics whizz kids at MXR managed to fit everything the Carbon Copy does into a Phase 90 sized box is beyond me. Second- the MXR preserves the original signal extremely well, even my pricy Maxon had a nasty habit of cutting some of the dry volume when engaged- the MXR is transparent. Third, the delay time, the MXR offers a good deal more available delay than most analog delays on the market.

This is not only important for allowing longer delays, but also in preserving the tone of shorter delays. Lastly, the onboard modulation is a great effect, and one that I once spent big bucks on a "boutique" pedal for, only to be disappointed with the quality of the raw delay itself. The MXR does not get lost in gimmicks and rest on them as a substitute for raw quality, rather it provides a great foundation, and adds the modulation switch as icing on the cake.
But enough of my accolades, is the Carbon Copy for everyone? Probably not. It is a very dark delay, and people who like the bright, "hi-fi" quality of digital delay will not find anything to rave over here. Even I keep a couple of digital delay units around, because the sounds are different and not interchangeable.
I personally would love stereo outputs, or the ability to get a "fully wet" level with the mix knob (even turned fully up there is still some dry signal passed through), but for the price, and considering the quality of sound these are very minor complaints. For people who love that echo-y, analog sound and don't need a lot of bells and whistles, however, the Carbon Copy is a tough unit to beat, and at a price that puts some competitors to shame. If you're reading this, it's probably just one opinion in a long line of rave reviews of this little sparkly green box, so do yourself a favor and go out and try one!
