A recent showcase article has gotten me thinking about oatmeal again, which is something I don't normally spend a lot of time doing. Oatmeal is not a topic that usually wanders into the average freewheeling bachelor brain without special provocation. Because my life is beautiful, I just got a hold of a couple free boxes of McCann's Steel-Cut Irish Oatmeal by a totally unrelated coincidence, and since I had oatmeal on the brain, I decided to give it a try. Turns out it's probably the best oatmeal I've ever had. (And I say that without irony. This is an oatmeal I actually find myself feeling passionate about. Crazy.)
The big difference between McCann's oatmeal and the regular oatmeal most of us eat here in America is that it's not rolled oats, just whole oats cut into pieces. At first glance it looks more like Grape-Nuts or wheat germ. Cook it up, though, and it becomes recognizable as oatmeal, though its grittier texture and richer flavor still keep it distinctive. If, like me, you're a fan of complex and interesting textures in food, you've got to try McCann's oatmeal. It's got real body, well-formed and pleasantly chewy, with a slight echo of a hint of a crunch to it. The only oatmeal I've ever had that even came close was the thick-rolled oatmeal my organic food store sells.

It's much more likely than most oatmeal to stand on its own in terms of flavor, but I'm not quite that hardcore, so I cut up a nectarine into it and added cinammon and sugar. Needless to say, it was pure gold. (I'm also discovering as I write that it's edible raw, and makes a tasty, simple, and healthy snack. Think sunflower seeds, but not.)
Nutritionally, McCann's oatmeal is off the charts good for you. It's got no salt or cholesterol (though I'd add a pinch of salt when you're cooking it to bring out the flavor), and only 2g of fat per serving. (One serving is a quarter cup dry, which makes about 1 cup cooked.) It's high in soluble fiber (2g per serving), which can help reduce the risk of heart disease. And forget preservatives - the only ingredient is whole grain Irish oats. That makes me smile.
The one potential downside of McCann's steel-cut oatmeal is that it takes half an hour to cook. You don't have to supervise it closely for most of that time, though - I folded a load of laundry and did some homework while mine was cooking - and if you have the foresight to soak it overnight you can cook it in less than half of that.
Long story short, it's delicious, nutritious oatmeal. It may take a little extra time, but it may also save your life, so in the end I guess this one is just a matter of priorities.
