Review: Coca-Cola Zero

I have been a Coke drinker for many years. I find the flavor of classic Coca-Cola to be delicious and satisfying.

I have tried to make the switch from Coke to Diet Coke, but I was unable to due to the unpleasant flavor. Oh sure, I know that if I stopped drinking Coke and forced myself to drink Diet Coke day after day and month after month, I would eventually become used to the flavor, but that is not something I want to put myself through. I want to drink something that I am going to enjoy.

Naturally, when the Coca-Cola Company launched Coke Zero, I was very curious and interested in trying the new beverage. After all, the beverage supposedly offered the same Coke taste, but without the calories. By no means did that mean Coke Zero could be considered a healthy beverage, but as far as soft drinks go, Coke Zero could be considered a healthier alternative to classic Coke, but only in a very limited sense.

Now it has been years since I tried tasting Diet Coke, and when I gave Coke Zero a taste, it was like I was thrown back in time to when I had a Diet Coke in front of me. Coke Zero and Diet Coke are almost identical to the taste. Coke Zero is essentially Diet Coke, only with a different name and a different colored bottle.

I do not know where the same great Coke taste was, but it was no where present in the Coke Zero bottle. I drink Coke more than any other soft drink beverage on the market, and I know what Coke tastes like. Coke and Coke Zero share about as much in common as Coke and Diet Coke. How Coke Zero has not been a disaster for the Coca-Cola Company akin to the New Coke disaster of years ago is a major mystery to me.

Maybe some people have switched from Coke to Coke Zero and have done so simply by drinking Coke Zero until their taste buds managed to adjust or perhaps some Diet Coke drinkers have started drinking Coke Zero, I don't know. As I said, Coke Zero has somehow been enough of a success to remain on the market, but why consumers drink it when it tastes nothing like Coke and is almost identical in flavor to Diet Coke is, again a mystery to me.

I have a friend that only drinks Diet Coke and one time, he tried drinking Coke Zero. Now, if for whatever reason he cannot get his hands on a Diet Coke, he will take a Coke Zero because they both have very similar flavors. I will never wrap my hands around another Coke Zero bottle or can though.

The people at the Coca-Cola Company can continue to promote Coke Zero as an alternative option to switching from Coke to Diet Coke and the company can continue to try and say that Coke Zero offers the same great Coke taste, but I am both figuratively and literally not buying what it is they are selling.

Classic Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero have two different, unmistakable flavors. Now, if we compare Classic Diet Coca-Cola to Coca-Cola Zero, I doubt I would be able to tell the difference as the difference in flavor, if any, is minuscule.

If the Coca-Cola Company ever attempts to improve the Coke Zero formula, I will give the new and improved product a try, but until that happens, I am sticking with classic Coke.
