Review: Blue Bird Powdered Donuts

Like everyone else, I cheat on my diet sometimes. When I do it is usually for something I really crave. My latest backslide was the fault of Dollar Tree. At least that's my claim and I'm sticking to it.

They called my name. They enticed me with their aroma. They peeked at me through the clear wrapper window. What could I do but succumb?

Of course once I realized how much of a slide they really were, I worked hard at giving as many of the little critters away as I possibly could. It's a good thing I have grandchildren and skinny children too.

A serving of Blue Bird Powered Donuts is 4 of the tiny masterpieces. There are 6 servings in each bag.

One serving equals 220 calories. Oth that amount 90 are fat-related.

There are 10 g of fat in each serving. Of that, 4.5 g comes from saturated fat, 3 g from monounsaturated fat and 1.5 g from polyunsaturated fat. The only saving grace is that these donuts don't contain trans fat.

Blue Bird Powered Donuts also contain a whopping 30 g of carbohydrate and 15 g of sugar. Additionally, they hold 220 mg of sodium and 5 mg of cholesterol.

On a more positive note, the donuts offer 2 g of protein and 1 g of fiber. They also boast 4% of the daily- recommended amount of iron and 2% of the needed calcium.

Blue Bird Powered Donuts contain the following: corn starch, corn syrup solids, dextrose, egg yolks, enriched bleached and unbleached flour, modified cornstarch, nonfat milk, partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening, palm oil, salt, soybean oil, soy flour, sugar, water, wheat gluten, wheat starch, and whey.

They also contained artificial flavors and colors, colored turmeric and annatto, corn dextrin, distilled monoglycerides, enzymes, guar gum, karaya gum, modified wheat starch, potassium sorbate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium acid phosphate, sorbic acid, soy lecithin, tapioca dextrin and xanthan gum. Finally, they have monocalcium phosphate, mono and digylcerides sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, propylene glycol, mono and diesters of fats and fatty acids, sodium alginate, sodium aluminum phosphate and sodium stearoyl lactylate.

The Blue Bird pledge promises more than great tasting donuts. They promise the best donuts. But do they live up to that pledge? To decide one needs to examine various aspects of this food product.

It promises quality ingredients. Personally, I could live without a few of the ingredients found inside these donuts. There are a lot of chemicals there that I'd just as soon do without in the future. I give the donuts only 1 out of 5 stars here.

Next they promise the donuts are baked to the highest standards possible. That is difficult to judge without actually viewing the baking process. However, if the end result is the deciding factor, then I offer Blue Bird 4 out of 5 stars. They aren't the best powdered donuts I ever tasted but they are right up there.

Finally, they promise experience behind their product. Since Blue Bird Bakeries has been baking since 1919, you have to give them this one. It's worth 5 out of 5 stars.

As far as freshness, Blue Bird clearly prints a "use by" date on each bag so that you know the donuts you are choosing are the freshest possible. That is worth another 5 out 5 stars.

That adds up to 20 out of a possible 25 stars for an average of 4 stars. That is good. If you really need to feed your powdered donut crave, then Blue Bird Bakeries Powdered Donuts is certainly a viable option.
